Healing Is Not Just About the Body: It’s Time to Go Beyond the Scales!
When we talk about healing, we often focus on the body: weight loss, exercise routines, and food choices. But what if healing goes far deeper than just the physical? What if true healing isn’t just about what we eat or how much we weigh, but about transforming our entire relationship with ourselves—mind, body, and spirit?
In a world where diet culture dominates, it’s easy to think that healing is synonymous with physical change. I spent many years believing that if I could just control my body—if I could shrink it enough—I would finally feel “whole.” But over time, I discovered something more profound: healing is about so much more than just the body.
True healing is about finding peace within ourselves, releasing old wounds, and learning to love who we are, beyond the number on the scale. It’s about reconnecting with our emotional selves, rebuilding trust with our bodies, and giving ourselves the care and compassion we truly deserve.
For many of us, the journey to healing begins with focusing on physical change—changing our weight, our appearance, or our habits. And while taking care of your body is absolutely important, it’s only one piece of the puzzle.
We can lose weight or follow an exercise regimen, but if we don’t address the emotional baggage we carry, the negative thoughts, or the self-criticism, we might find ourselves stuck in a cycle of temporary progress followed by setbacks. Healing goes beyond the surface.
If you’ve ever felt like you’ve tried everything to fix your body and it hasn’t worked, it might be time to ask yourself: What is my body trying to tell me? Are there deeper emotional wounds, old patterns, or unhealed trauma that need attention?
The emotional and mental aspects of healing are just as important as the physical. It’s about understanding the why behind your habits and behaviors, exploring your inner world, and reconnecting with your true self.
Here are some things to consider:
Are You Holding Onto Shame?
Shame is a powerful force. It can make us feel like we’re never enough and that there’s something wrong with us. But shame doesn’t define us—it’s simply something we carry. Ask yourself: What am I ashamed of? What beliefs do I hold about myself that no longer serve me? Healing starts with shedding that shame and embracing who you are—flaws, quirks, and all.
Do You Trust Your Body?
For many, diet culture teaches us that we can’t trust our bodies—that we need to control them. But our bodies are incredible, intuitive systems that tell us what they need. How often do you listen to your body? How can you start to reconnect with the signals your body is giving you instead of ignoring them or pushing them aside?
What Is Your Inner Dialogue Like?
The way we speak to ourselves has a huge impact on our healing. Are you kind to yourself? Or do you criticise, judge, or compare yourself constantly? Healing begins when we change our inner narrative—when we stop seeing ourselves as a problem to be fixed and start treating ourselves with kindness and compassion.
How Do You Define Health and Worth?
Diet culture has conditioned us to associate health with a specific body type or number on the scale. But true health is holistic—it’s about emotional well-being, mental peace, and the ability to feel good in our own skin, no matter the size. How do you define health? What would it look like for you to feel truly healthy, both inside and out?
Now that we’ve explored why healing goes beyond just the body, let’s dive into some actionable tips to help you nurture yourself on a deeper level:
Healing begins with awareness. Pay attention to your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. When you feel triggered or upset, ask yourself: What’s really going on here? Often, the emotional pain we feel is linked to deeper issues that we need to address. Be curious about your feelings, and be gentle with yourself as you explore them.
Rebuilding trust with your body takes time. Start by accepting your body where it is, not where you wish it could be. Practice self-compassion and focus on what your body can do, rather than how it looks. Every step toward body acceptance is a step toward healing.
Healing is not a straight line. Some days will be better than others, and that’s okay. Don’t expect perfection—instead, embrace progress. Celebrate the small victories along the way, whether it’s feeling more comfortable in your skin, having a day where you don’t obsess over food, or simply being kinder to yourself.
True healing involves confronting and processing emotions, rather than suppressing them. Allow yourself to feel. Whether it’s sadness, anger, or frustration, your emotions are valid and deserve attention. Seek support when needed, whether through therapy, journaling, or talking with a trusted friend.
Healing isn’t just about what you eat or how you move—it's also about nourishing your soul. Create a self-care routine that nurtures all aspects of you. This might include activities like meditation, reading, spending time in nature, or pursuing hobbies that bring you joy.
Healing is not a quick fix—it’s a journey. It’s about reconnecting with yourself, embracing your unique path, and letting go of the pressure to be “perfect.” It’s about creating a life where you’re not defined by your appearance or your body’s size, but by your authenticity, your worth, and your ability to love yourself unconditionally.
So ask yourself: What does healing look like for me? And what small step can I take today toward healing my mind, body, and soul?
You are worth it—all of you. 💖🌸
